If you could rewrite any book’s ending, which one would you choose?

Books have a way of staying with us long after we’ve turned the last page. Some endings leave us inspired. Others leave us heartbroken. And every once in a while, an ending leaves us wondering, “What if?”
If I could rewrite the ending of any book, I’d choose Allegiant, the final book in the Divergent series.
Before anyone grabs their pitchforks, let me say this—I understand why Veronica Roth chose the ending she did. Tris’ sacrifice carried tremendous emotional weight and reinforced the idea that true courage often requires giving everything for those you love.
But if I were writing the ending, I would have made a different choice.
Instead of ending Tris’ story with her death, I would have let her live—not because every hero deserves a happy ending, but because I think her greatest challenge was never surviving the battle. It was learning how to live after it.
Imagine Tris returning to a world scarred by years of conflict. She and Four would have to help rebuild trust between factions, heal broken communities, and discover who they were without constant war. Readers would get to witness the emotional aftermath instead of simply imagining it.
Sometimes surviving is the harder journey.
To me, that ending would have carried just as much emotional weight while offering something equally powerful: hope. It would remind us that courage isn’t only found in sacrificing your life. Sometimes it’s found in choosing to keep living, healing, and helping others do the same.
In the end, I think that’s what makes books so special. They give each of us the freedom to imagine how a story could have unfolded differently while still appreciating the one the author chose to tell. We may not always agree with every ending, but the fact that we’re still talking about them years later is proof they left an impression.
As for me, I’d let Tris walk away from the final battle, not because she didn’t deserve to make the ultimate sacrifice, but because I wanted to see the strength it takes to live after surviving one. Sometimes the most inspiring heroes aren’t the ones who give their lives—they’re the ones who carry their scars forward and use them to help build a better future. And to me, that’s an ending worth turning the final page on.
