Cultivating Harmony: What to Release for a More Peaceful Life

What could you let go of, for the sake of harmony?

Well, what is harmony? Harmony is a state of being in which different elements coexist peacefully and effectively, creating a sense of balance and tranquility. There are several different areas one might consider when hearing that word. It could involve leaving a loved one when you’re in a bad relationship or distancing yourself from a family member or a difficult boss. It could also mean decluttering your home, car, garage, or just your life in general.

I’ve been working on my harmony for many years now. I started by ridding myself of negative self-talk, replacing it with positive affirmations, which can enhance self-esteem and overall happiness. At first, it seemed like a lot of work, but now I catch myself before I speak negatively, and I encourage others to do the same.

For most of my life, I thought I didn’t hold onto grudges or resentments. Boy, was I wrong. Once I realized I was holding onto pains from the past—such as experiences in foster homes and being put up for adoption, which I didn’t even remember clearly—I began the process of letting it all go. The freedom from those past emotions was phenomenal, and I believe it will help with any future relationships.

I’ve never really had a problem with material possessions because when you move from home to home, you take very little and trust that if something is needed, it will come to you. Now, for a couple of my hardest challenges: unrealistic expectations and control. Who doesn’t have issues with control? Either you feel the need to control every tiny aspect of your life, or you try to control others.

I grew up with an OCD mom and a dad who demanded immediate attention. Living with them, I never wanted to control anyone, so I thought I went with the flow. However, upon reflection, I realized I was quite lazy in relationships and had unrealistic expectations. Once I acknowledged this and started correcting it, I believe my next relationship will be filled with peace and acceptance, reducing disappointment and increasing satisfaction.

In conclusion, letting go of these burdens—negative self-talk, past grudges, material excess, unrealistic expectations, and the need for control—can pave the way for greater harmony in life. The journey to harmony is ongoing, but each step taken brings us closer to a balanced, peaceful, and fulfilling existence. By examining what we hold onto and why, we can begin to release those things that no longer serve us, making room for joy and serenity.
