If you’ve been wondering where I’ve been, buckle up, because the past few weeks have been anything but smooth. I’ve officially made the jump to Florida—landed somewhere between Tampa Bay and Miami—but getting here was far from easy. Picture this: my Chevy Traverse loaded to the brim with nothing but art supplies, my dog riding shotgun, and me running on barely 10 hours of sleep over two and a half days. Sounds like chaos, right? It was.
Before I even left, anxiety had me in a chokehold. I had planned my move for weeks, but when the day arrived, I found myself frozen. Two weeks came and went, and I was still in the same place, my anxiety growing heavier by the day. Every attempt to pack a box or figure out what I actually needed was like trying to wade through quicksand. I’ve never done something like this alone before, and it hit me—hard. No one was there to say, “Hey, grab this, do that.” It was just me, staring at a mountain of tasks, not knowing where to start.
Finally, on the day I was supposed to be on the road, I was still in my house—boxes half-packed, most of my clothes still in the closet. Panic set in fast, but I pushed through, throwing things into the car last minute like a madman. By the time I actually left, it was nearly 24 hours after I had promised myself I’d be out the door. The car was stuffed with art supplies, canvases, tattoo gear, pencils, brushes—everything except the one thing I probably should have focused on: my clothes. But when your art is your life, priorities shift.
Then came the drive—2.5 days with barely enough money for gas and no room for error. The thought of running out of fuel in the middle of nowhere haunted me the whole way. My dog, my co-pilot, seemed more relaxed than I was, and by the time I hit the Florida border, I was running on fumes—both in the car and in my body. There’s something surreal about pulling into an unknown town, drenched in sweat from the humidity, not knowing a soul, and realizing that this is your new life.
But you know what? Now that I’m here, it feels right. The energy here is wild and overwhelming, but every anxiety-filled, chaotic moment led me to this point. I’m planting my feet in a place where no one knows me—yet. Soon, they will. Soon, the world will know SoDakArtist is here, and I’m just getting started.
