How the Artist Within Me Will Retire

How do you want to retire?

At 33, I haven’t given much thought to retirement. The concept often feels distant, something reserved for another time. However, as an artist, my vision of retirement is less about quitting and more about transitioning into a different phase of creativity. I won’t be working for “the man” in my later years, that much is certain. Instead, I envision a life where my art flourishes more than ever, free from the constraints of traditional employment.

In my retirement, painting, drawing, and writing will continue to be integral parts of my daily routine. The freedom to create without the pressures of deadlines or commercial demands will be liberating. I imagine waking up each day inspired by my surroundings, whether it’s the serene landscapes of a foreign country or the vibrant energy of a bustling city. Art, in all its forms, will be my constant companion, guiding me through this new chapter of life.

Music, too, will play a significant role. Retirement will afford me the time to explore new musical interests, perhaps even learning new instruments or composing original pieces. Music has always been a source of joy and inspiration, and I plan to delve deeper into this passion. Whether it’s strumming a guitar on a quiet evening or composing a symphony, music will be a key component of my artistic journey.

Writing will be a cornerstone of my retirement. As someone who is currently working on a book, I see this time as an opportunity to fully immerse myself in the literary world. The stories and ideas that have been simmering in my mind will finally have the space to flourish. Without the distractions of a 9-to-5 job, I can dedicate uninterrupted hours to writing, revising, and polishing my work. I envision myself completing not just one book, but many, each exploring different facets of human experience and imagination.

Relocating to another country is a possibility I strongly consider. As the political and social landscape of the United States continues to evolve, the idea of retiring abroad becomes increasingly appealing. A different country could offer a fresh perspective, new inspirations, and a lifestyle that aligns more closely with my values and artistic goals. Immersing myself in a new culture could provide endless opportunities for growth and creativity.

The good times will undoubtedly be filled with artistic endeavors. No matter where I find myself, I will create. There are no “ifs,” “ands,” or “buts” about it. The essence of who I am as an artist will remain steadfast, and retirement will be an extension of this lifelong commitment. The luxury of time will allow me to experiment with different mediums, perfect my craft, and perhaps even share my knowledge with others through workshops or collaborations.

Ultimately, retirement for me isn’t about ceasing to work; it’s about dedicating myself entirely to the pursuit of art. It’s about living a life enriched by creativity, unbound by the demands of a conventional job. I envision a retirement where each day is a canvas, waiting to be filled with the colors of my imagination. The artist within me will thrive, creating a legacy that reflects my passion and dedication to the arts.
